Create a Kitchen for Healthier Eating and Better Connection

You want to eat healthier, better food prepping efficiency and a kitchen that encourages intimacy and connection. In this week’s Joy of Nesting, I’ll share a few things you can do to help you create a kitchen for healthier eating and better connection.

You’ll learn ways to:

  • Organize your kitchen for healthier eating.
  • Create a cozy and inviting kitchen atmosphere.
  • And ideas for cooking together and bonding with your partner in the kitchen.

One of the first steps to making your kitchen a healthy oasis is to organize it in a way that supports your wellness goals.

This means stocking your pantry, fridge, and freezer with nutritious staples, arranging your items in a way that makes cooking easier, and avoiding food waste by using smart storage solutions.

Organize Your Kitchen for Healthy Eating

  • Place a fruit bowl on the kitchen counter.
  • Display apples, pears, oranges, or whatever fruit you enjoy most on the kitchen counter.
  • Keep your fridge well-stocked. A well-stocked refrigerator helps to keep healthy eating at the top of your mind.
  • Place washed berries in a bowl, cut up vegetables and put them in a clear container.
  • Keep fresh salad ingredients in the salad bin.
  • Have hummus and other healthy dips readily available.
  • Position unhealthy foods in an opaque container in the back of the fridge!
  • Make kitchen gadgets and cooking tools easy to find. You are more likely to use your air fryer, food processor, or blender if they are in a place you can access easily.
  • Keep your blender and juicer on the counter where you can get to them easily.
  • Make measuring cups and spoons easily accessible. Using measuring cups and spoons on occasion can help you get a handle on what a healthy portion looks like, making it easier to manage your weight.
  • Use measuring tools for foods for foods like olive oil and nuts.

Create a Cozy and Inviting Kitchen Atmosphere

Another step to making your kitchen a cozy space is to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you and your loved ones feel comfortable and relaxed.

You can add simple touches or go more elaborate:

  • Paint the walls an inviting color. I love Farrow and Ball Paints.
  • Hang photos.
  • Replace the cabinet doors and pulls and keep the base cabinets. Use a pro painter and have he/she spray primes first, then spray paint with a high-quality lacquer look finish. I like Dunn-Edwards. I love their Warm White.
  • Add greenery like ferns, topiary and fresh flowers.
  • Display useful things like serving pieces, trays, crocks, beautiful wood utensils and baskets.
  • Play music. Music can set the tone for your kitchen and create a pleasant ambiance.
  • Keep non- toxic, scented hand, cleanser sprays and dish soaps on hand by the kitchen sink.
  • Add an island or Boos butcher block.
  • Add an area rug.
  • Treat yourself to some new kitchen cloths and towels.
  • Burn a candle. I love burning candles in the kitchen when I’m cooking!

Cook Together and Bond with Your Partner in the Kitchen

The final step to making your kitchen a cozy, healthy oasis is to cook together and bond with your partner in the kitchen.

Cooking with your partner can be a fun and romantic way to enjoy each other, try new recipes, and express your love and appreciation for each other.

Here are some ways to cook together and bond with your partner in the kitchen:

  • Try new recipes. Cooking new dishes can be a great way to spice up your relationship and your kitchen.
  • Take turns as chef and sous-chef. Cooking together can be a great way to show your partner how much you care and respect them. You can take turns as chef and sous-chef, or work as a team to prepare the meal.
  • Set the table for a candlelit dinner.

I hope this week’s Joy of Nesting helps you to make your kitchen a cozy and healthy oasis for you and your loved ones.

Remember, your kitchen is more than just a place to cook, it’s also a place to stay healthy, happy and connected.
