Sustainable Tips for Designing a Healthier Home

Creating a home that is both beautiful and health-conscious is more than just a trend—it’s a lifestyle choice that benefits both you and the planet. Here are some sustainable tips for designing a healthier home.

Natural products and natural materials like this vintage wood desk and stool with pottery and plants creates a natural look in the home and has low emissions.

Choosing Eco-Friendly Materials

Opt for materials that have a low environmental impact. Bamboo, cork, and reclaimed wood are excellent choices. These materials are not only sustainable but also add a unique charm to your home.

Bamboo

Bamboo is a highly sustainable material due to its rapid growth rate. It can be harvested in just 3-5 years, compared to traditional hardwoods that can take decades. Bamboo is incredibly versatile and can be used for flooring, furniture, and even decorative elements.

Cork

Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees, which regenerate their bark every 9 years, making it a renewable resource. It’s not only eco-friendly but also provides excellent insulation and soundproofing. It can be used for flooring, wall coverings and even furniture.

Reclaimed Wood

Using reclaimed wood reduces the demand for new lumber, thus preserving forests. Reclaimed wood can come from old barns, factories, or even wine barrels.

Recycled Metal and Glass

Incorporating recycled metal and glass into your design helps reduce waste and energy consumption. Recycled glass can be used for countertops, tiles and decorative pieces while recycled metal can be used for fixtures, furniture and structural elements.

Natural Stone

Materials like travertine, marble, and granite are durable and timeless. They require minimal processing, which reduces their environmental impact. Natural stone can be used for countertops, flooring and backsplashes.

Hemp and Linen

For textiles, consider using hemp and linen. These natural fibers are biodegradable and have a lower environmental impact compared to synthetic fabrics. They are durable and have an earthy, yet elevated aesthetic that complements sustainable design beautifully.

Use Energy-Efficient Appliances

Invest in appliances that have high energy efficiency ratings. Energy efficient appliances reduce greenhouse gas emissions and can significantly lower your utility bills over time.

Energy-efficient appliances are designed to use less electricity or water than their conventional counterparts, making them a smart choice for both your wallet and the environment. These appliances, often marked with the Energy Star label, can significantly reduce your household’s energy consumption.

For example, an Energy Star-rated refrigerator uses about 15% less energy than non-rated models, while energy-efficient washing machines can save up to 25% on electricity and 33% on water usage!

Investing in these appliances can lower your utility bill and reduce your carbon footprint.

Also, energy-efficient appliances often come with advanced features that enhance their performance and convenience. Modern energy efficient dishwashers not only use less water, but they also have sensors that adjust the wash cycle based on the load size and dirt level.

These appliances are a testament to how technology can be used to create products that are both eco-friendly and user-friendly.

Smart Appliances

Smart appliances take convenience and efficiency to the next level by integrating technology with connectivity. These appliances can be controlled remotely via smartphone apps, allowing users to monitor and manage their home devices from anywhere.

Imagine reheating your oven from another room or receiving a notification that your refrigerator door has been left open. These features add convenience and help prevent potential issues.

In addition to remote control, smart appliances often come with self-monitoring capabilities. They can also alert you to maintenance needs.

Opt for Low VOC Paints

Traditional paints can release harmful pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Choose low or no VOC paints to minimize indoor air pollution and create a healthier living environment. Low or no VOC paints are a healthier alternative, reducing indoor air pollution and creating a safer environment for you and your family.

I love Dunn Edwards Aristoshield products for kitchen and bath cabinets. They are low VOC paints that have the most beautiful quality and colors.

Selecting Sustainable Furniture

Look for furniture made from certified sustainable wood or recycled materials. Vintage and antique furnishings are great options as they extend the lifecycle of products.

Selecting sustainable furnishings is a great step towards creating an eco-friendly and health-conscious home. When selecting furniture, prioritize materials that are renewable, recycled, or reclaimed.

Reclaimed wood not only reduces the demand for new timber but also adds unique character to your space. Look for certifications like the Forest Stewardship Council.

Choose products made from natural materials like bamboo, rattan, jute and cotton.

Another important consideration is the manufacturing process. Opt for brands that use sustainable practices, such as low-emission manufacturing and non-toxic finishes.

Certifications like Greenguard help you identify products that emit low levels of volatile organic compounds, improving indoor air quality.

Prioritize Water Conservation

Water conservation is essential for both environmental sustainability and reducing household utility costs. One of the most effective ways to conserve water at home is by installing low-flow fixtures. Low-flow toilets, showerheads, and faucets can significantly reduce water usage without compromising performance.

A low-flow showerhead can save up to 2,500 gallons of water per year. Additionally, fixing leaks promptly prevents the waste of thousands of gallons of water a year.

When remodeling, there are numerous opportunities to incorporate water-saving features. Installing high-efficiency appliances, such as Energy Star-rated dishwashers and washing machines, can drastically cut water usage.

Incorporating a gray-water system is another excellent way to conserve water. This system collects water from sinks, showers and washing machines and reuses it for irrigation or toilet flushing.

Improve Indoor Air Quality

Improving indoor air quality is essential for maintaining a healthy living environment. One of the most effective ways to enhance air quality is by reducing indoor pollutants. Common sources of indoor pollution include VOC’s from paints, new flooring and cleaning products.

Incorporating natural materials and avoiding synthetic ones can also help maintain better air quality.

Proper ventilation is crucial for maintaining good indoor air quality. Ensure that your home is well-ventilated by opening windows as often as possible. I love to open my windows every morning in the summer.

It lets me cool the house down which saves me from using my air conditioner till quite late in the day. It also makes my home smell so good!

Mechanical ventilation systems, like heat recovery ventilators (HRVs) or energy recovery ventilators (ERVs), can also help by exchanging stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air while maintaining energy efficiency.

Using air purifiers with HEPA filters can further improve air quality by capturing fine particles, including dust, pollen and mold spores. For those with allergies or respiratory conditions, air purifiers can make a significant difference in reducing symptoms and improving overall wellbeing.

Incorporating indoor plants can help filter certain toxins from the air, though they are only supplementary and shouldn’t be considered as a primary purification.

Recycle and Reuse

Reusing and recycling are fundamental practices for promoting sustainability and reducing environmental impact. Reusing involves finding new purposes for items that might otherwise be discarded. This can be as simple as hanging on to heirlooms; recovering upholstered pieces rather than replacing them; and painting or refinishing wood furniture.

Recycling, on the other hand, involves processing used materials to create new products. This process helps conserve natural resources, reduce pollution, and saves energy.

Using recycled paper reduces the need for deforestation and saves water and energy. And by recycling your trash you can significantly avoid waste sent to landfills.

By incorporating these sustainable tips into your home design, you can create a space that is not only beautiful and functional but also kind to your health and the environment.
